Irian Jaya carpet python - hatchlings

Irian Jaya carpet pythons lay eggs. They hatch about 60 days later.

The babies are rusty in color - unlike the parents. This will change within few months and the reddish shade will disappear and turn black and the brighter areas nice yellow.

Here a juvenile Irian Jaya Carpet python. You can see the colors already changing - there is some yellow and black already showing through.

The babies can be nippy at first. It's their natural survival instinct - a defensive mechanism. They will also have a strong feeding response - this is also typical to adult carpet pythons.

Baby Irian Jaya carpet pythons will feed readily on frozen and thawed pinky mice. Most will prefer mice over rats, but should be switched to rats as soon as possible. Adult Irian Jaya carpet pythons should be fed rats, or it will take few mice for one meal.
